The centre of Edam has lots of nice shops, restaurants (La Galera, Damhotel). Every Wednesday there is a flee market, and there are 2 cheese markets in the summer. The area of Waterland has wonderful sceneries, and is excellent for cycling or walking. Within 20 minutes drive you reach Amsterdam, and within 5 minutes cycle you reach the Ijselmeer, with harbour, beaches, and watersport facilities. The famous Fort of Edam is UNESCO and derives from WOI. You reach Amsterdam in 20 minutes by bus, and the busstation is on walking distance from the house. In the weekend there are nightbusses. Edam is close to Volendam, which is a bigger and more touristy city, with more shopping facilities.
Twenty kilometers north of Amsterdam is a small but intact town from the 12th century. Edam, the cheese town located on the former Zuiderzee, has within its fortifications no less than 178 monuments, a variety of cultural and historical attractions, specialty stores and welcoming hospitality. "The Pearl of Holland 'has been compared to compatriot Volendam municipality reasonably undiscovered by the general public. And perhaps rightly so!
It is a town that you have to find yourself wandering! The visitor experiences " Little Amsterdam " or " Little Amsterdam ", a maze of houses, warehouses and shops , situated along nice streets, alleys and canals with street names that you find in the capital.

Dam Square and the cheese market forms two sides of the city's vibrant veins. One square is surrounded by the beautiful town hall, which also obtained the tourist office, where several nice hikes are established, the oldest stone house (1550) which serves as a museum and mark aunt stone dam. Tourist to find the other square in the summer cheese market place. The Kaaswaag is in itself an attraction.
Edam you can see from the water: with electric powered boats whisper or a group arrangement with an old koeboot. And head you towards the small port of Edam you meet along the restored and opened Fort in Edam, the northernmost defensive work (early 20 e century), part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and UNESCO World Heritage Site . The harbor with impressive sea lock is again engaging. Including through the magnificent pavilion, the beautiful site and the unique location overlooking the IJsselmeer.
Edam is also a city of traditions and active people. The St. Matthew Passion in April, the Music Day and Piano Walk in May, the cheese markets in July and August, the fair end of August, cultural Singel Festival in September, the 'Walk about Music "in October and many (art, books and regional food) markets . See the calendar on this site. The unique way in which St. Martin (November 11) is celebrated, should not go unmentioned. The Sinterklaasintocht mid-November is one of the prettiest in the Netherlands!
